winners of ‘Capture Kirkstall’ 2025 Photography Competition
Winner
charlie Baker
Untitled
“This photo was taken on one of my early morning runs. One of the best things about living in kirkstall is how close you are to the canal and nature. Seeing the seasons and light change through the year is almost worth the early morning run.”
What the judges said
This image beautifully captures the peaceful transition from day to night. The vibrant, painterly gradient of orange, pink, and purple in the sky is visually stunning and contrasts beautifully with the sharp silhouette of the tree on the right. The tree’s bare branches add texture and drama, while the city skyline on the horizon provides a sense of scale and subtle narrative. The composition is strong, with the horizon placed low, allowing the sky to dominate and speak emotionally. A truly calming, atmospheric shot.
Highlights
- Excellent use of natural light and colour.
- Balanced composition with leading lines from the horizon.
- Emotional resonance and seasonal atmospheres.

Second Place
Katie Bold
Kirkstall in colour
“My son Noah next to a billboard at Kirkstall Forge train station. The colour of Noah’s hair and clothes matched beautifully with the colours of the bird.”
What the judges said
This image is both playful and clever. The juxtaposition of the boy looking up at the oversized goldfinch mural creates a charming interaction between human and nature, almost like a moment of wonder. The pastel pink background is bold but doesn’t overwhelm — instead, it enhances the vibrant colours of the bird and the boy’s outfit. The image feels spontaneous yet well-framed, and the emotional tone is curious and whimsical. It subtly explores themes of scale, curiosity, and the beauty of everyday urban art.
Highlights
- Strong visual storytelling.
- Effective use of scale and contrast.
- A warm, natural moment that feels authentic and light-hearted.

Third Place
Kate Stevenson
Double rainbow
“A brief break between showers!”
What the judges said
This photo brilliantly captures the collision of nature and urban life. The double rainbow arching across the grey sky is a breathtaking natural element that seems to hover protectively above the row of typical Leeds red-brick homes and graffiti-covered walls. The saturated colours of the rainbow contrast powerfully with the muted tones of the street and sky. The graffiti adds grit and texture, while the rainbow adds hope and softness — it’s a visually and emotionally layered image that feels both real and uplifting.
Highlights
- Excellent timing — catching a double rainbow is always impressive.
- Evocative contrast between gritty urban texture and serene natural beauty.
- Strong message of finding beauty in unexpected places.
