Jan Doherty

Assembly House artist
“I studied fashion and textiles at Art College, followed by a career in community arts and festivals. I retired from work in 2018 to focus on my passion for textile arts, in particular quilt-making. My works take the form of collages, using photo imagery as a starting point, combining self-dyed, printed, and painted fabrics. I am a resident artist in Assembly House Studios.”

“I am an illustrator and 2D animator. My roots lie in illustrative and traditional art forms. I studied digital art in higher education, using this medium for animation. My practice is eclectic, with works ranging from digital animation to traditional painting. This merges and brings together various art mediums to create a unique composition that best fits the concept that is being explored. The themes of my projects vary, but there is a recurring link to mental health and its effects on the physical form. It uses the external to expose the internal and often invisible.”

“I graduated in 2021 from Leeds Arts University with a first-class BA (Hons) in Fine Art. My work talks about the humdrum of everyday life, its metaphors, and anthropomorphic correlations. I am now studying full-time for a Master’s in Fine Art (digital) at Central Saint Martins, London. I work in Leeds and have got a studio there too.”

“Through the medium of impasto oil paintings, my practice seeks to explore our relationship to the architecture and spaces we inhabit; exposing its stark contrast with nature. Typically through notions of home and distant phenomenologically constructed spaces.”
