2026 Kirkstall Bunting Festival

Get involved and make a bunting flag this summer

This summer we are joining forces with Natasha Joseph, of We Belong Here, to bring the Bunting Festival to Kirkstall.

Your finished flag will join hundreds of others together in a grand and colourful display. The bunting flags will be on show at Kirkstall Abbey during the Art Trail on 18 and 19 July 2026.

Bunting flag kits

The individual bunting flag kit are suitable for one person to make. You can order extra kits if more people in your household wish to take part.

What’s in the kits?

Each bunting flag kit includes:

  • fabric
  • bunting patterns
  • fabric glue
  • sewing kit
  • simple instructions and inspiration prompts
  • material and stitching guidance in a ‘How-To’ resource booklet
  • access to ‘How-To’ videos so you can follow along step-by-step.

Kirkstall Collage

We invite you to respond to the theme ‘Kirkstall Collage’. Celebrating the places, people, history, nature, and everyday moments that make Kirkstall special to you and using collage to express this.

We encourage you to use scraps and waste material to collage your flags and think about what makes Kirkstall unique to you.

This could include:

  • local landmarks
  • the River Aire or the Leeds and Liverpool Canal
  • wildlife
  • school life
  • memories and family stories
  • favourite walks
  • patterns, colours, and symbols that represent our connection to a place.

Some of the designs created through the project may also help to inform the development of a future mural on Kirkstall Bridge.
